Today was the best day of my three years attending CPAC. The day started off great with Former Senator Rick Santorum and moved on to Newt Gingrich, Anne Coulter, Bill Bennett and lastly Glenn Beck. I will get to Glenn in a minute. Rick was running for president. Newt was too... Coulter was hilarious, Bill Bennett was inspiring. Glenn Beck was remarkable. Beck has the ability to turn everything you ever think upside down with the most simple history lesson. We are not dealing with politics as we know it, or as it has been/is being taught to us. In these times there are people that want to fundamentally change the way our country works. They want to disregard the rules that we have always gone by in sake of making life easier for them, and this is killing our country and our freedom. This is not just a Democrat issue, but a Republican one too. This is a personal question we need to ask ourselves, "are we happy with the way things are going?" Is spending our way out of a Financial Crisis the right thing to do? Should we blindly follow anyone that says they have the answers to all of our problems? Just a few scattered thoughts I've been dying to get out. On another note from today's speech, there was a panel on the 2010 elections. I waited my turn and was given the last question to ask. I asked, "In the Bluegrass state of Kentucky, we are having an ideological struggle to replace Senator Jim Bunning with a Conservative and Libertarian candidates. What are your thoughts and predictions on the race?" The best they could come up with was saying that they were proud of how far Kentucky has come from being a blue state to a red state. I was very disappointed, the response did not even hit on the same topic. I think the panel, granted rushed on time, was either afraid to tackle the subject, or ignorant on the race and dynamics of the state. Either way, I got my 2 minutes of fame and I am still wondering the Conservative movement's opinion on the KY Senate Race. I want to Thank Dr. Joel Turner for taking us on this trip, without his mentoring, we would not have had such a great experience.

Today was another great day at CPAC and in Washington DC. We started the day off by visiting Fords Theater, where Lincoln was shot and killed. Then we walked across the street and saw where Lincoln died. Learning about President Lincoln was a great segway into our visit to the White House. Thank God for the I-Phone, because Tim is the only reason we have pictures from Casa De Obama. There is a rule that you can't bring a camera into the building... dang near killed me, but I managed to get a Gnome of the Day. Following the White House we made it back to CPAC for some great panels, including one with our friend Niger Innis about saving Charter Schools. We also caught a session on 2 minute activism with youth. In the panel, a young conservative who spoke got up there and condemned CPAC, and anyone else who supports gays. This was ridiculous and uncalled for. The continuous bashing of homosexuality by members of the GOP is counterproductive and hypocritical to the conservative principles of limited government. But, he got his 2 minutes of fame and then stormed off the stage as he was boo'd by most everyone in the crowd. After the adrenaline pumping crazy guy we got to see Ron Paul speak and inspire the Libertarian wing of the party. I respect all opinions and view points and even share some with the Ron Paul fans. However the behavior of some of his supporters was not only rude and disrespectful, but disgraceful to anyone they stand for. These individuals remove the legitimacy that these candidates may have. If they can shake the supporters that yell and scream and throw things at people who have done nothing but serve their country, they will never get anywhere as candidates. Back to Ron Paul, I always enjoy hearing him speak because he makes us think about things we would otherwise not think about. So, today was another great day and I am sooo looking forward to tomorrow and Glenn Beck!!!!!!

Wow! never have I been caught off guard by such a series of surprises than I was today at the CPAC conference. Very first speaker was Marco Rubio, without knowing him and just knowing that he is running as anti-establishment I wrote him off as a teaparty wacko or a Ron Paul crazy, however I was caught off guard and was very impressed with him as an individual and a candidate. The US Senate will be very blessed if he gets in office. Our first surprise, though I predicted it (Tim), was by the one and only Vice President Dick Cheney. No real headline remarks, just the same old anti-Obama rhetoric. Nice touch being introduced by his Daughter Liz, a foreign policy expert. A rumor had begun to circulate that he would make an appearance thanks to Fox. Our next surprise came from Mass. with love. The newly elected Senator Scott Brown who won in a special election to replace Ted Kennedy came on before Governor Mitt Romney. This one came with no warning and was a great addition to the CPAC family. Lastly we heard from Leader John Boehner and NRA President Wayne LaPierre. Both were very inspirational and informative. It was definately a star studded powerhouse of individuals to start off the first official day of the conference.

I don't like to post other people's news or facts or information but I feel that this needs to get out there and more people should know about it. There is a new structure being built along side our current government and it is New and expands beyond any constitution or governing document.

Summer in Summary... The Gnome is Home... (For now)

Here I am back in good old Union, KY tucked back in the woods watching the chickens terrorize the yard. Being home is full of mixed emotions; I loved working in our nation's capitol, making a difference in these historic, challenging, and difficult times. In Senator McConnell's office I worked in his press office where I helped write Congressional Records, file press releases, and compose the daily press clips. In Senator McConnell's office I worked with a great duo in the press office and other very talented young people "across the hall." The interns I worked with in the Senator's office are also of a magnificent quality and I expect great achievements from each of them.

After six weeks I made my way over to the House of Representatives where I had the privileged of working for Congressman Brett Guthrie. In Congressman Guthrie's office I helped answer constituents correspondence and questions. I also helped get the mail folded, stuffed, and sent everyday. Along with the variety of meaningful tasks that I carried out, I got to participate in a tele-town hall where the congressman spoke to some 3,000 constituents on the phone at one time. In Congressman Guthrie's office I worked with a great team including the Congressman. During my tenure with Guthrie it was always fun and exciting working with Nan Natcher.

When everyone asks which one I enjoyed more, I can honestly say neither because they were such different experinces it would be like comparing apples and oranges. However when asked what was my favorite experience up there, I can say that being in the Rotunda for the Ronald Reagan Statue unveiling was the most memorable event. Next in line would be seeing the fireworks on the National Mall on July 4th.

With this post I would like to say that the Gnome is not going away, rather changing his direction and goals. You will see more of him.

In the coming future I will be attending a few GOP meetings around and then I will be reporting in to Peace Ford Tower (PFT) at WKU for RA fall training.

Today was my last day on the hill and actively working for congress. It was a great last day. I went up the 300 steps to the top of the dome, this was extremely cool but very nerve wrecking as I looked over the lip of the dome into the rotunda. After the dome tour we took our photos with the congressman in the rotunda of the Cannon building. It was a very great last day in the office.

Since I have been up here I have learned a few things. If you have ever listened to the comedian Tim Wilson, "there 100 things everyone needs to know to survive in (DC)... well here 25 of them..."

1.) If you lie on the floor of the metro and take pictures of a gnome, you will be “that guy.”

2.) The restroom is always as far away from your office as possible

3.) You can tell anyone anything on a tour and they will believe you

4.) Don’t do anything stupid anywhere or you will end up on a blog (www.dcinterns.blogspot.com)

5.) Getting in the wrong senate elevator can be awkward… sorry Lindsey Graham…

6.) DC is a pretty good place to be when you turn 21

7.) Aerosmith will rock on forever!

8.) The George Washington Masonic Temple is very creepy and you will have your heart ripped out if you go there.

This was my last weekend in DC, so I wanted to make sure that I got to do everything that I wanted to. We started out by getting a HUGE burger at Ray's Hell Burger. Then I went to the Air and Space Museum on the mall. It has been a long time since I last came to the museum and a lot had changed. It was very neat to see all of the rockets and especially the 40th anniversary of the moon landing exhibit. After that I went to the Native American Indian Museum, my hopes were not very high. I was mildly surprised at the art work in their, but it was very weak on the history. It was more focused on the modern culture rather than history. Still pretty neat.

He's hidden... can you find him?

This morning we got up early and went to the National Archives. Not only did we get get to see the Declaration of Independence, the Bill of Rights, the Constitution, and the Magna Carta, but we also got to see the Taft Bath Tub, alternative designs for the lincoln memorial, and Shaq's Shoe. Next we had lunch at HardRock Cafe. I wandered the hill a little while and found some things that happen to be around that I never noticed. Most notably was the Taft Memorial Bell Tower and the Spring well. Lastly we went to the Postal Museum, one of the less known museums and one of the coolest too. Enjoy!

Today was my second to last Friday in DC. Even after working in the Capitol I am finding places and views that I have not seen before. Today the Congressman took a group onto the Speaker of the House's Balcony, which happens to be the best view of the city. We also took advantage of a wonderful Friday afternoon to take portraits of Nan Natcher, the other intern in our office. I am working on filling this weekend with some exciting things to see so that I can make this last weekend a series of good posts and pictures. Some upcoming things to look for will be the Air and Space Museum, The Marine Marching Band at Iwo Jima, Health Care coming to a vote, (maybe) Dinner at a nice place, and any other suggestions that you may have.

The Gnome Book Club

Today was a slow day so I took advantage of the nice afternoon to catch up on some reading in the back yard. (contrary to popular belief and my professors' knowledge, I do know how to get something out of a book) I started out with a recommended read from my dad entitled "The Unfoldment of the Great Within," by Bernard Jensen. It was a great analysis of leadership and a well rounded being and sums up how a healthy life can lead to a more productive person and leader. My second read "Republican Leader," a biography of Mitch McConnell by John David Dyche. This book is a great read for anyone interested in KY Politics, Mitch McConnell, The Senate, or Government in general. The book is a focus on his political life and dives into his leadership and influence in both the state and national stage. I was fortunate enough to have the book signed by McConnell last week. I hope anyone interested in either of the above topics checks out the books if you get the opportunity.

Today we went to the National Gallery of Art with the Smithsonian. There was a lot of weird art and different kind of stuff. Not exactly my kind of place, but it was not bad. Next we went to the National Botanical Garden in the shadow of the Capitol. A lot cooler than I thought it would be, definitely worth the trip there.

Here are some photos from the Education and Labor Committee's Mark up on Health Care legislation. for those of you who are not political nerds like me, that means this group is attempting to change the Universal Health Care bill but can't because there are too many Democrats. It was very interesting to see that part of the process. Congressman Guthrie introduced an amendment also. (Still have to check about showing photos of the Congressman on here.) After work today I went to a softball game with our staff assistant where I proceeded to suck. I was wearing slip on loafers and cargo shorts... and lets face it I have not played any sport since 3rd grade. I also proceeded to rip a rather large hole in my pants and did not notice until I was half way home. But all in all a good day. Getting up early to go tour the White House... Casa De Obama!!! Today I went to a committee meeting where we watched Brett Guthrie and all other members giving opening remarks on Health Care in the Education and Labor Committee. There are other pictures but I don't want to release them until I clear it with the office. Health Care is getting big right now. Also there was a shooting near the Senate side of the hill. Traffic stop turned violent suspect shot and killed by Capitol Police. Good guys 1 criminal 0.

Today we went to the George Washington Masonic Memorial Temple in Alexandria. It was very unique and interesting. It was kind of like a shrine and a place to worship George Washington. It was a little odd. After that we went up into the Washington Monument and got to see a very awesome view of the city. Hope you enjoy!

Today we went and visited the National Mall including the Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Memorial, the Vietnam Memorial Wall, WWII Memorial, and of course the White House again. Tomorrow Nickel and her mom are coming to the capitol for a tour. Then I am taking them back to Baltimore for their flight home.

Saturday morning we started off with a visit to the White House (casa de Obama) then headed to Arlington National Cemetery for a very moving experience. We watched the Changing of the guards at the tomb of the unknown soldiers and we went into Robert E. Lee's house. We also went to Kennedy's grave site with the eternal flame. Afterward we took a short nap before meeting some friends from WKU on the National Mall for the 4th of July Fireworks! This was really cool and I am sure that I took way to many pictures, but hey... who's counting.

Today Nickel, her mom, and I went to the National Holocaust Memorial Museum. It was going to be over a two hour wait to get in, then I noticed a sign that said Federal Employees enter immediately. So I showed my fancy intern ID and they actually let me in without waiting... I love this city. That was a very moving museum and we were not allowed to take pictures in it so I did... Next we grabbed lunch at Union Station where everything was decorated for the fourth. Then we wandered down the mall to the Natural History Museum where we saw a bunch of bad taxidermy and familiar animals... The African Exhibit makes me feel like I am in my living room. Ready for the 4th!!!

On my 100th post we went to the National Geographic Museum where they had two exhibits, one on travel photography in Western Europe, and the other was on Lions and Leopards. Next we headed to St. Matthew's Church where we saw where JFK's funeral was. It was a very pretty cathedral. Lastly we wandered around Embassy Row for a couple of hours.

As most of you know I have been serving as the Press Intern in Senator McConnell's DC office, yesterday was my last day. It has been an honor and a privilege to get to work with such outstanding people. This experience has let me see what it is like to work in this fast pace city and the importance of message control when dealing with the media. Though I am finished in the Senate, Washington has not had enough of me yet. Starting Monday I will be serving as an intern in Congressman Brett Guthrie's Office until August. I am sure I will have an equally exciting and fulfilling experience in congress... Thanks God Cap and Trade is over... I just want to thank all of the other interns I served with and all of the staffers who have made this summer one that is not to be forgotten. Specifically I want to thank Courtney and Robert for putting up with me everyday. I hope you enjoy these pictures, after work we decided to run over to the capitol and take some pictures while there was nobody there. The capitol is a remarkable building and I had to share some of the less seen hallways with you all.

Today here are some photos from Senator McConnell at a Press Conference in the Capitol. After work I went to a WKU DC alumni event with a few people from the city. I never realized there were so many toppers on the hill. Tonight's Gnome is brought to you by Bens Chili Bowl off of U street in DC. Ben's chili is a cultural hub for DC, many famous politicians, actors, civil rights leaders and musicians have come from all over the world to visit the resturant. The place has been there since the late 1800's and is still there. The walls are donned with pictures with patrons from Obama to Jesse Jackson to Hillary to Bono. In memory of Michael Jackson, tonight they played non stop MJ songs. I did something different with the Gnome, I played with photoshop, I don't think I like it but it is kind of artsy... kinda.

So just to start off, that was amazing!!!! ZZ Top was alright, but when Aerosmith took stage, It was awesome! Know I know what it was like to grow up during the 80's... The concert really was a cultural experience, Right up there with the Daytona 500 and Woodstock. I must say that my favorite song of the night was "I don't want to miss a thing." Now I can mark that off of the list of things to do before I die.

So the original plan today was to go to the Native American Museum and the National Archives... Yea, that didn't happen. In stead, mom text me and said that there was an Iranian Protest outside the White House. After pursuing the news, we went there and watched for a little while. Then we met Charles at Ollies Trolly for lunch. Lastly we wandered up toward the National Portrait Galleries. This was very cool. I even got my picture taken with W. Check it out.

Tonight we went to the 48th annual Congressional Baseball game between the Democrats and Republicans. Every year the Representatives and Senators compete against each other in the Nationals Stadium for the sought after title. For the last 8 years the GOP reigned supreme on the field. Tonight the Dems won... The most irritating part was when their fans started chanting "Yes we can" ... Kentucky Congressman Ben Chandler, grandson of former KY Governor and former Baseball Commissioner Happy Chandler was a backup player for the left. Our starting pitcher was supposed to be John Ensign of Nevada who announced yesterday that he had an affair with a campaign staffer who was married to a staffer in his DC office. I said at least there was a republican scandal not involving another man or a little boy... a little light hearted humor.

Note that I wanted to see what all I could shoot from sitting in one seat the entire time.

Also note that I hate shooting sports. . . . Enjoy!

Today, we decided to make a trip to the National Cathedral. Contrary to popular belief, it is actually NOT a catholic church, rather an Episcopalian Church. We had a wonderful day today at Mt. Vernon, the home of our first President George Washington. After a 45 minute Metro ride and a 30 minute Bus ride, we finally arrived at the famous plantation that belonged to our first commander in chief. It was very neat to see how he arranged his house and property to accommodate his livelihood, many hobbies, and family on his families gifted property. He designed, built, and laid out all of the buildings on his property, the landscaping, and the farming aspects to make for a perfect and flawless layout. Our day trip to Virginia was a lot of fun and I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in learning about our nations foundation.

This afternoon we took paddle boats out onto the tidal basin of the Potomac river here in the city. We had a great time just cruising around and getting sun burnt. Then we went and visited the Jefferson and Roosevelt Memorials along the water. Finished up with dinner at a Tia restaurant and shopping for the next week at Whole Foods. Ready for another week of work.

This morning after a failed attempt to go up in the Washington Monument we went to several of the Smithsonian Museums. We started at the Freer Art Museum then we went to the Smithsonian Castle, then we went to the Hirshorn Art Museum. Never been a huge fan of art, but it was very interesting.

Today was an amazing day! The capitol hosted the unavailing of the official California statue of the late President Ronald Reagan. The star studded crowd allowed me to personally meet and shake the hand of Michael Steele, Henry Kissinger, Orin Hatch, and Brett Guthrie. Also talked to Elaine Chow. The service was lead by the Majority Leader Harry Reid, Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, the Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, and the Republican House leader John Boehner. Former First Lady Nancy Reagan also spoke right before the statue was uncovered. It was a very wonderful experience to be a part of.

On another note, the Gnome of the day is brought to you by thunderstorms... this one closed Massachutets Avenue both ways for over an hour.

Looks like we are temporarily back in action photographically speaking. So the camera was sent off today but i figured out how to upload images from my phone to my computer.

Since I last blogged a lot has happened, I survived week one on the hill, we celebrated the sacrifice of our service men and women and we had a free weekend on the hill. Sunday night we went to the steps of the capitol where we watched the National Memorial day concert. Then next morning we went to the National Memorial Day Parade down next to the mall. Gary Sinise, aka: CSI NY and Lt. Dan from Forest Gump, was the grand marshal for the parade. enjoy.

So the long awaited first week is over. It has been a great week so far on the hill. Congress is in recess for a week so things slow down a bit. Had lunch in the capitol with an excellent view of the mall, but of course my camera is dead so I can not shoot anything... I have sent some messages and have some friends helping me get a replacement from canon for the time being. Hopefully we can make something happen next week. On another note, the weekend is here and we are making plans for the Smithsonian and some other museums.

So heres the deal... My camera broke. Long story short, the Canon Camera Gods have horrible timing, so the gnome of the day is being brought to you with a back dated image, this was an extra from yesterday. Hopefully I can get ahold of another camera soon and re start this project.

That aside, fun day today, only walked 1.5 miles again, most all underground. Also Ran into Ben Stein, he was standing behind me in line and I didn't even notice it. Went on a tour of the Capitol, but of course no photos... but I am sure I will be doing another one soon. Had lunch in Union Station, ate at the asian food place where they yell at you until you come over for a free sample then they yell at you for blocking there counter... crazy people but not bad food.

After work we a group of us went to sit in the Senate Gallery and we watched the senate debate, vote, and hang out in the Senate Chamber. First Day in the District went well, got settled into work found my way around the hill.

Very nice first floor apartment with a nice living room, dinning room, small kitchen, and a single bedroom with 2 bunk beds in it. One roommate here so far.

Noem Heads to DC!

Looks like I am off on another worlwind, once again to Washington DC. I will be boarding a plane at 4:30 Monday afternoon for Ronald Reagan International Airport. I will be serving as an intern in Senator Mitch McConnell's Press Office for 6 weeks, then I will be serving as an intern in Congressman Brett Guthrie's Office. I am very excited for this opportunity, but I will miss my beautiful girlfriend Nicole, my family, WKU, and the Bluegrass state. I will return on August 1st to prepare for the fall semester move in at PFT. I will be posting while on my many adventures in the Capital. Hope you will join me!

Kentucky's College Students offer a bright future.

Over 50 college students from across the commonwealth gathered for the annual convention for the Kentucky Federation of College Republicans this past weekend in Bowling Green at WKU. Among the Guest speakers were 2nd District Congressman Brett Guthrie, Secretary of State Trey Grayson, Grayson spoke person and former CR Les Fugate, and David Adams from the Bluegrass Policy Institute. The common message from the convention was the need to utilize new technologies to further deliver the conservative message and to publicize the fact that young people are not as liberal as they are portrayed. They also elected their new leadership team. President Jacob Sims, VP Charles Badger, 2nd VP Shane Noem, Secretary Andrew Carroll, Treasurer Alex Gerard.

Bringing it Home...

After a snowy 5:00 am wake up call, we boarded our plane in Baltimore and returned to Nashville, where our journey began.

This week we joined a group of close to 10,000 like minded individuals to stimulate our political knowledge and motivation. This week we learned policy, politics, and personal touch from the best in the business. I know I have been motivated by the magnitude of the event, and the sheer momentum that has been created this week. The conservative movement is not dying, nor is it changing, rather we are returning to our core values and principles.

This was an opportunity to see leaders and influential political figures that we would have otherwise never experienced.

The CPAC trip has not only expanded my political knowledge and abilities, but it has also been an experience with making new friends and networking with other young professionals.

I would like to take this time to thank everyone who helped make this trip possible, especially Dr. Turner for your leadership and guidance on this journey. I would also like to thank all 16 of the other students, who helped make this trip memorable and exciting, there was never, NEVER, a dull moment. Lastly I would like to thank everyone who followed our blog and our experiences, without you all, our motivation to bring continuously interesting posts would have been fizzled out by now. I thank you for your support and encouragement.

Heavy Hitters close out!

We started the morning off with a little of Lasley's favorite potential presidential candidate, Tim Pawlenty, the current Governor of Minnesota. He made his CPAC debut as the second speaker of the day. PS Lasley, I wore the button, and some guy interviewed me thinking I was from Minnesota. Next was the infamous Anne Coulter, she gave an always provocative speech about the state of the party. This speech was followed by a series of boring energy experts, but there was one speaker who stuck out to me after saying that global warming is a racist agenda and that got me thinking. It is also anti-poverty. There was an interesting movie that I am looking into called its not evil, its wrong. This movie debunk global warming. We also heard from Bill Bennett who is a CNN commentator, writer, radio host, and former Reagan Education Secretary. We also saw the famous former Secretary of Labor, Secretary Chow. Lastly but not least was the Great American Hero, Rush Limbaugh, his pompusness and confidence is perfect. He insulted everyone and anyone he could while still acting sophisticated and maturely. Whether you like him or not, he truly is a master of communication. He is also still the most popular talk show host in the world, and now a recipient of the Defender of the Constitution Award. And last but not least again... his body guard looked just like Stalin!!! This trip has been a growing experience and a wonderful opportunity to network and make new friends. I hope you all have enjoyed our blog, I will make one last post when I get home tomorrow.
